Deputy Secretary of Defense Praises ESTCP'S Installation Energy Test Bed Initiative
07/25/2011In a speech at a military energy conference last week, Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn III lauded ESTCP's Installation Energy Test Bed initiative as a significant component in the military's efforts to use emerging energy technologies as a way to improve operational effectiveness and cut costs.
Tools for Building an ISCO Standard of Practice
07/13/2011In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) involves the injection of strong oxidants into the subsurface to destroy organic chemicals of concern and remediate a site to a risk-based cleanup goal. ISCO, with one or more oxidant, can be implemented alone or in combination with other remedial technologies. Though the chemistry involved is relatively simple, the technology is not easy to implement. A technology practices manual, on-demand video, and reference book are now available to enhance the site-specific engineering of ISCO for remediation of contaminated groundwater and help ensure more predictable, cost-effective performance.
Symposium Call for Poster Abstracts Opens and Technical Program Announced
06/17/2011SERDP and ESTCP’s annual Symposium will be held November 29 - December 1, 2011, in Washington, D.C. The Call for Poster Abstracts is now open! The deadline for submissions is July 29. The technical program encompassing 15 technical sessions and four short courses is also now available.
New On-Demand Video Covers Measurement and Use of Mass Discharge and Mass Flux at Contaminated Sites
05/23/2011Use of mass discharge and flux measurements can improve conceptual site models and remediation decisions as compared to a reliance on concentration data alone. This on-demand video of a short course presented at the 2010 SERDP and ESTCP Symposium includes a summary of the basic concepts, describes available measurement and estimation techniques, and examines several case studies of mass flux measurements at contaminated sites.
On-Demand Video Available on Advanced Classification Methods for Military Munitions Response
04/19/2011Distinguishing intact munitions from nonhazardous metal and geology, a process referred to as classification, is critical to DoD’s efforts to cost-effectively remediate and reduce risk at munitions-impacted sites. This on-demand video of a short course presented at the 2010 SERDP and ESTCP Symposium provides a tutorial on the sensors, methods, and status of the classification of military munitions using geophysical methods at field sites under operational conditions.
