Development of an Expanded, High-Reliability Cost and Performance Database for In Situ Remediation Technologies
ER-201120
Objective
The objective of this project is to expand the remediation cost and performance databases originally compiled as part of SERDP project ER-1292. Specific objectives include: (1) expanding the existing databases at remediation and monitored natural attenuation (MNA) sites to include longer post-remediation monitoring periods and more sites; (2) evaluating if the longer-term data at these sites, particularly those where rebound was observed, is consistent with performance trends originally observed; (3) identifying key factors that contribute to or control remediation performance and secondary water quality issues; (4) evaluating and adding performance data from existing technology-specific ESTCP performance studies and from three to four remediation projects described in the peer-reviewed literature; (5) completing a field program at three to four sites to collect additional post-source treatment monitoring data to fill in gaps related to long-term performance, rebound, and secondary water quality impacts; and (6) updating the existing Decision Support System software with the results of this study.
Technology Description
This project will primarily involve a data mining effort, where large amounts of data will be reviewed, reduced to a usable form, and then analyzed to identify patterns and make predictions. Data mining works on the simple principle that the more data available to be compiled and analyzed (especially if the data originated from multiple different sources), the more powerful are the conclusions that can be made. Data mining allows a user to test a hypothesis, or alternatively, to develop new hypotheses based on patterns that may not have been previously apparent.
Benefits
An enhanced Source Depletion Decision Support System with more sites and longer temporal records will provide additional predictive capability to the Department of Defense (DoD). The expanded database will also provide an improved understanding of the types of sites where remediation benefits would be realized, enabling DoD to focus its remediation efforts. The data and findings generated as part of this project are of potential benefit to all DoD sites, with a particular emphasis on those sites where a remedy is about to be implemented or where there is some question about the long-term effectiveness of a technology that has already been implemented. The data will be disseminated in literature reports and a software tool that will be freely available to site decision makers. (Anticipated Project Completion - 2014)
