Data Collection with Vehicular-Based Systems

MR-201160

Demonstration Summary

In this project, Sky Research will demonstrate and transition the MetalMapper sensor system to personnel engaged in production-level data collection as part of the live site demonstrations. Advanced electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensor data will be gathered and provided to a wide range of data analysts to compare and contrast different processing and interpretation methodologies. In doing so, this project will provide an assessment of MetalMapper's transition potential to production demonstrators who do not hold advanced geophysical degrees.

Technology Description

MetalMapper is an advanced time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) system, designed specifically for UXO detection and discrimination. The system uses a three-component TEM transmitter and seven tri-axial receivers to characterize each target. It can be deployed in dynamic detection mode (one transmitter only) or in a cued-interrogation mode where data are collected with the system stationary over a previously flagged location. The high-quality data acquired are processed to produce three-axis polarizability curves, which are used to describe a buried object of potential concern. These curves can then be processed using classification methods and libraries of polarizability curves from known objects to predict whether a buried object is an item of concern or harmless clutter.
