Demonstration Summary

As part of the live site demonstrations, this project will demonstrate rapid, yet careful, collection of cued data with Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) TEMTADS system. These data, in conjunction with advanced data processing and analysis techniques, will be used to demonstrate improved unexploded ordnance (UXO) classification performance as compared to the current commercial technologies. High-quality electromagnetic induction (EMI) data processed with advanced classification techniques offer the possibility to confidently leave detected clutter items in the ground and target only potentially dangerous anomalies, enabling the majority of remediation funding to be spent on the safe remediation of UXO items rather than clutter. The technologies to be demonstrated are designed to efficiently collect the necessary data to perform munitions response cost-effectively.

Technology Description

The TEMTADS family of sensor platforms is based on the EMI sensor developed under ESTCP project MR-200601, which was designed specifically for UXO data collection. Each individual sensor consists of a 35-cm outer transmit coil and a 25-cm inner receiver coil. These sensors are driven by a custom transmitter with a fast current turn-off time. Decay data are collected with all-digital electronics until 25ms after turn off of the excitation pulse. One or more of these sensors are then assembled into one of the TEMTADS sensor platforms. The TEMTADS array is a vehicle-towed, 5x5 array of sensors with multiple cm-level GPS receivers for guidance and positioning. The TEMTADS 2x2 Man-Portable Cart is a cart system designed for use in areas of rugged terrain and features 3-D cubes in place of the planar receivers. For the most rugged situations, the TEMTADS HandHeld Sensor consists of a single sensor deployed using a template data collection approach to collect locally well-registered data equivalent to the multi-sensor platforms.
