6th International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds Monterey, California May 19-22, 2008 This event is sponsored and organized by Battelle with 16 government and private organizations active in site remediation research and application (including SERDP and ESTCP) as co-sponsors. The Conference has become one of the world’s leading environmental remediation conferences. The Fifth Conference (May 2006) was attended by 1,650 scientists, engineers, regulators, remediation site owners, and other environmental professionals representing universities, government site management and regulatory agencies, and R&D and manufacturing firms from around the world. Approximately 775 platform and poster presentations were given in 61 technical sessions, and 4 panel discussions were held. Rounding out the technical information available to registrants were 70 exhibits of environmental remediation capabilities and equipment and 11 short courses. 2008 Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) Seminar Palm Springs, California August 12-14, 2008
Leading explosives safety experts from the military, government agencies and academia will gather for this three-day seminar that will include technical sessions, roundtable discussions, an exhibit hall, VIP speakers and social events. Experts from around the globe who have been charged with the mission of enhancing explosives safety will use the seminar as a venue to share knowledge and best practices focused on the 2008 theme of “Operationalizing Explosives Safety.” The DDESB operationalizes explosives safety by proactively engaging and integrating explosives safety tenets, risk identification and mitigation into every facet of the munitions lifecycle. For 80 years, the DDESB has led the way in the development, implementation, execution, and oversight of the DoD Explosives Safety Management Program (ESMP), which has played a vital role in enhanced asset and force protection, and ensured the preservation of the Department’s war fighting capabilities. The 2008 DDESB Seminar will present the latest research, development findings, and lessons and provide vital networking opportunities. For more information about this event, visit www.ddesbseminar.org.

Metal Finishing Workshop Washington, D.C. (held May 22-23, 2006) SERDP and ESTCP co-sponsored a workshop to develop a strategic plan for future environmental research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) investments and to support the transition of demonstrated environmentally benign metal plating and finishing technologies. Workshop participants (1) reviewed the current and emerging regulations both in the United States and abroad; (2) examined the metal finishing and plating practices currently used in the Defense manufacturing and maintenance community; (3) reviewed the available, environmentally benign alternatives; (4) identified technical, financial, and other barriers to implementation of these alternatives; and (5) identified gaps in current metal finishing technology that should be addressed by future RDT&E investments. These findings, applicable to the entire metal finishing industry, are discussed in the Workshop Summary Report.
Expert Panel Workshop on Reducing the Uncertainty of DNAPL Source Zone Remediation Baltimore, Maryland (held March 7-8, 2006) SERDP and ESTCP co-sponsored a workshop to define a path forward to further reduce the uncertainty surrounding dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sites by providing (1) a critical review of the progress to date, including a consensus perspective on the implications of the funded research for practical remediation; (2) an overview of the current state of the science; and (3) a summary and prioritization of the remaining data gaps. More than 40 experts participated in the workshop, which defined key issues and critical and high-priority needs for both research and demonstration projects. Results are described in the Workshop Final Report, which will guide the SERDP and ESTCP strategic plan for investments toward DNAPL source zones over the next 5 to 10 years.
SERDP and ESTCP's Partners in Environmental Technology Technical Symposium & Workshop Washington, D.C. (held November 29-December 1, 2005) ESTCP Project-of-the-Year Award Recipient SERDP Project-of-the-Year Award Recipients | Threatened, Endangered, and At-Risk Species on DoD and Adjacent Lands Symposium and Workshop Baltimore, Maryland (held June 7-9, 2005) This Symposium held in Baltimore, MD brought together the nation's top researchers for endangered species. The event was sponsored by the Department of Defense's (DoD) Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the Army's Environmental Research and Development Center, as well as the DoD Legacy Program, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Geological Survey. In addition to members from these organizations, participants included researchers and managers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and various non-profit organizations, state agencies, universities, and private consulting firms.
Developing effective methods for sustaining the DoD training and testing missions, while simultaneously protecting threatened and endangered species (TES), is a challenge requiring strong partnerships that support ongoing cutting-edge scientific research. The focus of the workshop was to help in establishing and fostering such partnerships. The workshop brought together nearly 200 stakeholders to discuss TES conservation and research needs on DoD and adjacent lands. For more information, please visit www.serdp.org/tesworkshop.
| Expert Panel Workshop on Research and Development Needs for the In Situ Management of Contaminated Sediments (held August 10-11, 2004) SERDP and ESTCP co-sponsored a workshop to (1) examine the current state of the science and engineering, (2) identify the gaps in knowledge and technology, and (3) prioritize those gaps where investments in research and development or field demonstrations could have the greatest impact on DoD's aquatic sediments remediation program. Nearly 80 research needs were identified and prioritized at the workshop. These needs are described in the Workshop Final Report, which serves as a strategic plan to guide investments in the area of contaminated sediments over the next 5 years by SERDP and ESTCP.
